Delay of passenger’s flow to railway station force changing of departure timetable

Delay of passenger’s flow to railway station force changing of departure timetable.
The statement required to know whether delay of passenger’s flow to railway station force changing of departure timetable in T
anzania Railway Corporation. Research finding in table 4.5 show that majority 95% of the respondent agreed with the statement Delay of passenger’s flow to railway station force changing of departure timetable, while 5% of the respondents disagreed with the statement.

During the researcher’s interview, one TRC manager said that, “Sometimes the train operators are required to change timetable due to delaying of the passengers to arrive the train stations, hence starting the journey could increase unnecessary operating costs”.

The study findings imply that some areas the train waits long for the passengers who delay to reach the area, the delay of passengers causes delay in packing of luggage’s in train thus time extension. These findings relate with Downs, (2004) who explained that the departure time depended on easy availability of passengers at a given station, if they are available on time thus means no time waste hence early departure.

  • Breakdown of the railway facilities especially train and locomotives cause delay of operation

Research finding in table 4.5 shows that 80.0% of the respondent agreed with the statement that breakdown of the railway facilities especially train and locomotives cause delay of operation, while 15.0% of the respondents disagreed with the statement. This means that in areas where there is leakage within the train, engine damage, and trailer damage will delay the efficiency of operation at a given time.

Two interviewed railway officers they correlated on their opinions that, “When there is occurrence of train breakdown problems cause the management to stop the route until technical measures undertaken, this helps to reduce accidents”.

The findings relate with Saaty, (2001) who explained that failure to inspect the facilities such as engine, train trailers will lead to dis functioning of the entire component when it is it way forward hence causing damages and delay to arrive a required area.

  • Delay in maintenance/repair of railway facilities reduces punctuation level

The statement aimed to know whether delay in maintenance/repair of railway facilities is reduces punctuation level. Research finding indicate that 77.5% of the respondent agreed with the statement that delay in maintenance/repair of railway facilities reduces punctuation level, while 12.5% of the respondents disagreed with the statement. This imply that when using more time repairing the facilities including the railway, engines and other spare parts will reduce the punctuation level because the train will not be able to move while the process is continuing.

When the researcher when interviewed the TRC technicians, one of them said that “Sometimes the occurrence of delay in railway services are caused with delays in maintenance, it depends on the equipment’s availability that are to be repaired”.

Nelson, (2015) explained that the efficiency of any automobile, or any moving tool will depend on its functioning capacity and where it passes while it is in way forward.

  • Daily delays in operating cost approval cause service delays to travelers and freight

The statement aimed to know if daily delays in operating cost approval cause service delays to travelers and freight. Research finding shows that 80.0% of the respondent agreed with the statement, while 15.0% of the respondents disagreed with the statement. The study findings replicate that everyone needs to have a safe and quick journey, delays in operational cost will lead to loss and delays in luggage’s and cargo to reach a required area on time, will cause delay of people to an area of work and business.

Through the interview, one railway officer said that, “The railway’s punctuality level is highly depending from the punctuality of the management in approving daily railways operational costs so that everything to run as it was prior planned”.

The disadvantages of delay were explained by Eurgey, (2006) who showed that businessmen’s and workers are more after quick, trustful and efficient transport system which will help them to be at target area on time, therefore failure of transportation system will lead to delays to travelers and freight.

  • Lack of modern infrastructure

The statement aimed to know whether lack of modern infrastructure is major causes of delays in Tanzania Railway Corporation.  The study findings (Table 4.5) reveals that majority 77.5% of the respondent agreed with the statement., while 22.5% of the respondents disagreed with the statement. The findings imply that the absence of proper railways, standard railways and proper places where passengers will rest waiting for train will lead to the delay.

During the researcher’s interview with the management, three officers correlated in their comments that, “Operating railway functions under the outdated facilities is the main cause of delay as there is occurrence of continuous technical problems that leads to reduction of operations efficiency”.

The study corresponds with Lwesya, (2017) who explained the advantages of modern infrastructures for transportation emphasizing more on the quick and arrival of travelers and languages for business on time, therefore lack of modern infrastructure will lead to people discouraging that type of transport system.

  • Ways of eliminating delays in Tanzania Railway Corporation

The second objective was to determine ways of eliminating delays in Tanzania Railway Corporation. The objective based on three factors which are; adaptability and modernization of railway transport facilities (i.e. Standard Gauge Railway Investment), sufficient budget to railway operations is the panacea of delays, and railway infrastructure separation from other transport means.

  • Adaptability and modernization of railway transport facilities (i.e. Standard Gauge Railway Investment)

Research finding (Table 4.6) shows that majority 87.5% of the respondent agreed with the statement that adaptability and modernization of railway transport facilities i.e. Standard Gauge Railway Investment are ways of eliminating delays in Tanzania Railway Corporation. While 7.0% of the respondents disagreed with the statement. These findings imply that on solving the problems caused by the present system you need to forgot it and adapt to the new system. This means that having standard Gauge will help in fastening the services including time of arrival, will reduce the destructions of the railway which occur daily.

Through the interview with TRC officers, one officer pointed out that, “When the Standard Gauge Railway Investment will start its operations, there will be the increase in punctuality level of the service as it is modernized infrastructure”.

These are supported by Harris, (2017) who put forward the advantages of having modern railway that people will be able to travel fast and reach destinations and travel back to their homes, however this will reduce the amount of time being spent.
